Welcome to KW Institute for Contemporary Art!
KW is located in a former margarine factory in Auguststraße, Berlin-Mitte. The building, which is designed as a four-sided courtyard, is protected as a historic monument and therefore only partially accessible for visitors with limited mobility. The exhibitions are accessible via a goods lift. However, the lift cannot be operated independently for legal reasons. Our staff will assist you with this.
We would like to make the visit as smooth and barrier-free as possible for all visitors. To plan your visit with us, please write an email a week in advance to your visit to: firstname.lastname@example.org or contact our staff via telephone: +49 30 243459-132.
Spontaneous visits are also possible, but we must ask you to expect waiting times of up to 30 minutes in this case.
You are welcome to take a seat in Café Bravo or in the inner courtyard, where seating is available.
KW is located in Auguststraße 69, 10117 Berlin.

Entrance to KW’s courtyard
The main access via Auguststraße is 247 cm wide and without stairs. A concrete path leads through the entrance gate into KW’s inner courtyard. The inner courtyard of KW is paved with cobblestones.
Access to the exhibition and event rooms
Access to the exhibition rooms as well as to the Pogo Bar in the basement is possible via a goods lift. Unfortunately, the lift can only be used with a key and together with one of our staff members. To avoid waiting times, please get in touch with us one week before your visit via email@example.com.
The lift is located in the courtyard behind Café Bravo on the left-hand side.
KW Studio in the front building is not barrier-free. A staircase with 15 steps and railings leads up to the studio.
A barrier-free restroom is located on the 4th floor and is accessible via the elevator behind Café Bravo. Please get in touch with our employees for using the elevator.
The path to Café Bravo is paved with cobblestones. The entrance to the café is at ground level through a glass door. Currently, this can only be operated manually. If needed, on-site staff will assist with opening the door.
Access to the ticket counter and bookstore
Access to KW’s ticket counter is located in the rear area of the courtyard on the right side and is two steps above the ground (step height each 18 cm). A ramp suitable for wheelchairs as well as assistance can be provided by the counter staff.
Price policy and accompanying persons
Upon the presentation of an official certificate, severely disabled persons will obtain the reduced admission of 6 € and free entry for accompanying persons. Assistance dogs are allowed in the entire exhibition area.
In the area of the ticket counter, there is a ground-level entrance (width: 100 cm) to the checkroom. It has lockers that can be used against a deposit (1 € coin). There is also a free, unlocked checkroom. We would like to point out that KW does not assume any liability for checkrooms.
Seating and wheelchairs
In the inner courtyard, Café Bravo is providing seating. If required, we can provide mobile stools and a foldable wheelchair, both free of charge. Please contact the counter staff on-site or reserve in advance by phone via 030/24 34 59-0.
Unfortunately, prams cannot be brought into the exhibition rooms. However, they can be parked on the ground floor near the ticket office. Please talk to our staff at the counter if required.
A changing table is located in the barrier-free toilet on the 4th floor. If you need the elevator, please get in touch with our staff at the counter.
Exhibition texts in plain language
The texts for our exhibitions are also available in plain language. Please find them linked on the respective exhibition pages, and on KW’s main page under “plain language”. In addition, the exhibition texts in plain language are available as printouts in the exhibitions.
Support by KW staff
If you are planning to visit us unaccompanied, we are happy to offer you support. Please send us an email about a week before your visit to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you decide to come spontaneously and need assistance, you will find a bell at the main entrance of KW (on the right below the bell sign), which is connected to the ticket counter. Please use it and a KW staff member will assist you with access to the KW courtyard and Café Bravo. Please note that there may be waiting times without prior registration.
