Congo Cinematic Times is a screening curated by artist Sammy Baloji and film producer Rosa Spaliviero. Presented at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA, the evening features five short films by Mickael-Sltan Mbanza, Frank Mukunday and Tetshim, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt, Léonard Pongo, and Nelson Makengo.
From historic material to newly produced footage, spanning documentary, fiction, and animation, the films explore both contemporary and ancestral narratives, environments, and lived realities. Drawing on the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s natural resource wealth, the history of extensive mining, and its ongoing impact on local communities, the cinematic works trace ecological transformation, exploitation, memory, and resilience through poetic and visual storytelling.
The films were mostly created during artist residencies at Picha, an independent initiative based in Lubumbashi that supports artistic creation in the DRC, co-founded in 2008 by Baloji and Spaliviero, along with a collective of artists and cultural practitioners.
