Ewa Dziarnowska’s newly commissioned performance engages with Kazuko Miyamoto’s sculptural work, particularly the string constructions and the pieces made of paper, rope, and twigs, installed on KW’s third floor. Drawing from the hanging points in Miyamoto’s work, the performance responds to the artist’s (post-)minimalist approach to the geometrical grid and her interest in the body as an abstracted, erotic, and eccentric form. Through the site-specific gesture of dance, Dziarnowska inhabits and probes the space, inscribing it temporarily through moments of connection, shelter, and solidarity. Echoing Miyamoto’s use of line and curvature, and the subtle insubordination within her approach to minimalism’s exactitude and its modes of production, Dziarnowska reflects on the body’s relationship to the city and the rhythms of artistic creation.
The performance also traces a line back to Miyamoto’s own practice, particularly her invitation to dancer Yoshiko Chuma in 1979 to perform in relation to the large-scale string sculpture, later known as A Girl on Trail Dinosaur. Foregrounding the body’s role in shaping the string constructions, the event marked Miyamoto’s deepening engagement with spatial performativity and the politics of labor and display.
Ewa Dziarnowska is a Berlin-based dancer and choreographer working across performance, collaboration, and research. Her recent projects, such as This resting, patience and A Room With a Better View, reflect her sustained inquiry into improvisation as both method and philosophy. Through attention to sensation, rhythm, and relation, Dziarnowska investigates how movement can generate knowledge and resist the pressures of coherence and productivity. Her practice unfolds in real time, balancing precision and spontaneity while questioning the social and aesthetic frameworks through which dance is produced, witnessed, and circulated.
