Luis Ospina’s It All Started at the End (2015) is a documentary about the Grupo de Cali—a group of avant-garde Colombian artists who challenged the dominant film culture and forged a new path for Colombian cinema in the 1970s and 80s. The film explores the struggles, triumphs, collaborations, and friendships of some of the most important figures in Colombian cinema, including Carlos Mayolo, Andrés Caicedo, and Ospina himself.
Through interviews, archival footage, and personal memories, Ospina celebrates the enduring legacy of this group of artists who dared to dream big and challenge the status quo. At the same time, the film chronicles its director’s medical history because he fell seriously ill during its production. Karen Lamassonne was closely connected to the group, and worked among others with Mayolo and Ospina on a selection of their films.
