Jean Louis Schefer is one of the most influential French art and film theoreticians. The view he proposes in his publications feels closely related to the curational approach of Real Emotions: Thinking in Film, the current exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art: In The Ordinary Man of Cinema (1980), published by Matthias Wittmann, he provokes thought on the elementary role of the viewer and of cinema's power – regardless of whether the film in question is a mainstream or art film. Speaking with film scholar Matthias Wittmann and philosopher Vincent von Wroblewsky, Schefer shares his impressions of the exhibition and discusses its attempt to transpose filmic events into the museum space, thereby sharpening the perception of film as a medium for thought.
