As part of Jessica Ekomane’s exhibition Antechamber, KW and Berlin Artistic Research Programme present a special late-evening event featuring a conversation and three concerts. Transforming Ekomane’s sound installation in KW’s attic into a space for communal experiences, the program expands on the themes embedded in her work—framing sound as a social practice through the act of gathering and listening together.

The night begins with a conversation between Ekomane and critical theorist Antonia Majaca, exploring the politics of rhythm, alternative temporalities, and the transformative potential of sound. Following the conversation, the evening brings together Ekomane’s peers for three consecutive performances that relate to one another, exploring the concert format as a medium that allows for alternative sonic treatments of time and space.

Ekomane will perform compositions expanding on her research into time-keeping and rhythm, which also shaped the exhibition Antechamber.

Sound artist KMRU will present recent spatial experiments concerning a minimal yet immersive approach to ambient music, blending his signature use of field recordings with rich, layered synthetic textures. Relating to these varying registers of spatial sound, composer and cellist Okkyung Lee playfully engages space through movement and improvisation, highlighting the somatic nature of sound in a raw and unpredictable manner. All three practices unite body and mind in a way that foregrounds the meaning of sound as inseparable from its experience.

Throughout the evening, KW’s Café Bravo hosts an on-site bar to purchase drinks and snacks.

*Due to the install for the event, the exhibition Antechamber will be closed during the day of 11 April. The sound-piece central to the exhibition will be presented once at 7pm, before the conversation between Ekomane and Majaca.

Jessica Ekomane is a Berlin-based electronic musician and sound artist whose work has been presented internationally at institutions including Hamburger Bahnhof, Reina Sofia, and CTM Festival. A fellow of the Berlin Artistic Research Programme 2024-25, her investigations into algorithmic composition, tuning systems, and African mathematical knowledge systems challenge conventional boundaries between traditional and contemporary musical forms.

Antonia Majaca is a curator and critical theorist based in Venice, whose work examines the intersections of art, technology, and political epistemologies. Her current research focuses on decolonizing science and technology through methodologies that weave and cross diverse scales and epistemologies in response to planetary ecological crisis.

Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, is a Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist exploring field recording, noise, and sound art. His work expands listening cultures and challenges auditory norms through compositions, installations, and performances. He has performed at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, CTM, and more, with acclaimed releases on Editions Mego, Subtext, and Seil Records. A SHAPE artist and Prix Ars Electronica honoree, he holds an MA in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts.

Okkyung Lee is a cellist, composer, and improviser known for her visceral extended techniques and genre-blending approach. Drawing from noise, improvisation, jazz, classical, and Korean music, she creates immersive performances and site-specific works that challenge traditional concert hierarchies. She has released over 30 albums, including 나를 (Na-Reul) and Yeo-Neun, and collaborated with artists like Christian Marclay, Mark Fell, and Arthur Jafa. Lee is a 2025 fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.

The evening is hosted in collaboration with the Berlin Artistic Research Programme.
