The archive of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V. holds materials on the history of the association as well as its two institutions, KW Institute for Contemporary Art and the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, and their exhibitions and activities since 1991. The archive, which for now encompasses the period between 1991 and 2001, has been systematically indexed, partially digitized, and can be accessed on site. It includes a file archive containing documents on the association’s affairs and past projects of Kunst-Werke Berlin, as well as visual and audiovisual material and press reports.

Researchers who would like to use the archive’s resources for their work can make an appointment to visit the archive at info@kw-berlin.de. We look forward to your visit. Please also feel free to contact us with specific questions about exhibition materials even after 2001.

VW Fellowship for Archival Research

The support of Volkswagen AG made it possible to establish a fellowship for archival research at KW, within which art historian Jenny Dirksen conceived and implemented the development of an archive for KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V. from the end of 2018 to the end of 2022. Based on the archive material she processed and in conversation with contemporary witnesses, she researched the history of the association and its two institutions. Her research resulted in the publication KW, a history and the Podcast Loose Ends in Archives, among other things.
