Signal Box is Merlin James' first institutional show in Germany. It spans three decades of his work, representing his range of imagery, genre, technical and stylistic approaches.

Informed by painting's history, James' work does not quote or appropriate in familiar post-modern ways. Nor does consciousness of the art form's structures and conventions result in self-referentiality. Rather, James readdresses the world in its variety, even as the individual 'parts' of his art amount to an interrelated whole.
