"Pascal had his abyss that moved along with him", says Charles Baudelaire's poem Le Gouffre (The abyss). Pascal's wager sketches out a method for decision making under conditions of uncertainty. In the epistemology of the modern age, the "wager" or "bet" is the opposite of the "contract". The contract locks everyone into mutual obligation; a bet is a zero sum game: if someone wins that means that someone else, somewhere else, has to forfeit his share. If someone wins BIG, that means that someone else, somewhere else, has no means to feed his family.
