Red Table Gate is a performance evening by the Ukrainian artist and musician Kinder Limo, whose artistic research is concerned with Ukrainian culture and history seen from a postcolonial perspective.
During Red Table Gate Kinder Limo will serve self-cooked borscht: a soup of Ukrainian origin with a widespread popularity throughout Eastern Europe and other regions. While serving, Kinder Limo will reflect on their experience of being part of significant historical events such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, the 2014 Maidan Revolution and the annexation of Crimea. The story will be intertwined with accounts of their family, who has been resisting and fighting Russian oppression for more than hundred years. The collection of personal accounts becomes an analogy of Ukraine’s complex process of decolonization, with the aim to come to mutual understanding through compassion.
Ukraine is here understood as a gate of Europe, a country with a long and rich history that, due to its central position, connects multiple regions. At this very moment, Ukrainians are defending democracy and human rights, not only for themselves, but for Europe at large. Red Table Gate is a performative reflection on the history of Ukraine as much as a tribute to all the people defending this gate.
