KW, a history

KW, a history is a first, comprehensive publication on the history of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V., which appeared in 2021 on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. The publication provides insights into the extensive archive and tells a polyphonic institutional story. It includes a chronology of more than 300 pages including a detailed exhibition list and illustrations in the form of exhibition views, event photos, invitation cards, brochures, press reactions and other documents. From today’s perspective, it is explored what role KW and the Berlin Biennale have played and continue to play in the local and international cultural landscape from their beginnings in post-reunification Berlin until today. With texts by Klaus Biesenbach, Jenny Dirksen, Susanne von Falkenhausen, Eva Scharrer, and Jan Verwoert, as well as recollections by contemporary witnesses and companions from three decades: Doug Aitken, Alexandra Binswanger, Anselm Franke, Anna Gritz, Petrit Halilaj, Alanna Heiss, Erika Hoffmann-Koenige, Sabine Hornig, Kate Merkle, Susanne Pfeffer (& Elke Buhr), Aura Rosenberg, Santiago Sierra, Taryn Simon.

The publication was made possible as part of the anniversary program of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e. V. by the support of Volkswagen AG, Ólafur Elíasson, Julia Stoschek, Marina Kellen French Foundation, wissensART, and KW Freunde.
