The final talk in the series Questions on the Futures of Art Education is devoted to a future that we cannot grasp yet, but which already affects the practice of art education. How can art mediation function as an emancipatory and activist practice, and imagine other futures and realities beyond mere extensions of the present? Which spaces for action must be made possible within (para-) institutional bodies? What kind of systems, structures and alliances do we need for common thinking, action and to create a collective practice of resistance that takes advantage of the ongoing state of emergency?

Together with you and the founders of The Art Educator’s Talk, KW wants to reflect on the current situation, its possibilities and pitfalls in a digital exchange. On three dates, we offer the opportunity to discuss in small working groups with interested actors from the field, how art education—and thus also the institutions in which it takes place—can look like from the present situation in the future.

The two previous events were documented in a joint Padlet and will serve as source material for the third and final event on September 28.

Nora Sternfeld is an art educator and curator. From October 2020 onwards, she will be professor for art education at HFBK Hamburg. Since January 2018, she is documenta professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel (School of Art and Design Kassel). From 2012 to 2018, she was professor for Curating and Mediating Art at the Aalto University in Helsinki. Furthermore, she is co-director of the /ecm – Master Program in Exhibition Theory and Practice at the University of Applied Arts Vienna; part of the core team of schnittpunkt. ausstellungstheorie & praxis; a co-founder and part of trafo.K, Office for Art, Education and Critical Knowledge Production (Vienna); and since 2011, a member of freethought, a platform for research, education, and production (London). In this capacity, she was also one of the artistic directors of the Bergen Assembly 2016. She publishes texts on contemporary art, exhibitions, politics of history, educational theory, and anti-racism.

The event is aimed at people interested in art education, its formats, fields of application, and forms of organization. The Art Educator’s Talk is a trilingual blog and a series of live talks aimed at art educators and art mediators.

Questions on the Futures of Art Education was originally conceived as a series of events and network meetings at KW. Due to the temporary closure of the institution as well as the existing contact restrictions caused by the worldwide spread of the coronavirus, the event will take place online until further notice.
