With his film narratives, Wael Shawky attacks historical certitudes—like historiographical works his films don't unfold in an objective manner. Instead they always act as translations, creating a new reality. The difference between the artistic and historiographical translations lies in the alienation effect, with which the artist consciously unveils the construction and evokes a new perspective on the past.
