In her 16 mm films Tamara Henderson connects everyday scenarios with dreamlike sequences. Selected Objects are animated and manipulated by unseen hands to develop the plot as if in a puppet theatre. The movements are exaggerated through the manual edit in the 16mm camera. Besides the everyday objects, sculptures and textile works by the artist appear, and come to life arranged in diverse environments such as in nature or in front of theatrical backdrops.
Henderson’s films are accompanied by a presentation of the iconic 16 mm film Cry Dr. Chicago. The film released by George Manupelli in 1971 proves to be an ongoing source of inspiration for Henderson’s work. Cry Dr. Chicago is the last part of the trilogy produced around Dr. Chicago and the only part of the trilogy shot in color. Manupelli tells the story of a peculiar doctor specialized in gender transformation, who is on the run from the police with his friends and who seems to have already become a myth for the police officers chasing him. The trilogy is also seen as a documentary record of the ONCE Group, which organized the Festival of New Music in Michigan in the 1960s.
Next to two of Henderson’s earlier films Three Pockets di Oggetti (2013) and What’s Up Doc? (2014) the recently produced film Seasons End: Out of Body (2018) will have its German premier as part of the screening. Following these films the archival 16mm print of Cry Dr. Chicago (1971) will be presented.
