A Paixão de JL (2015) is a documentary based on tape recordings Leonilson started to create from January 1990 onwards. The spoken journal discloses an intimate insight into the artist’s dreams, memories, personal stories, and thoughts on the socio-political situation at the time. Combined with related news and other video fragments and placed in relation to his works, the documentary takes the viewer along in the artist’s daily life, mind and feelings, to show how these resonate in his oeuvre.

The online film screening will be introduced by Léon Kruijswijk, assistant curator of Leonilson: Drawn 1976—1993.

A Paixão de JL is a production of Bank Itaú Collection, Brazil

“(…) all of a sudden in this heavy metal world of ours, everybody fights to survive, it’s totally insane and there’s a guy who devotes his time to make a work of art, something delicate, loving, romantic, you know? A heart. The artist makes it public, puts his heart in the hands of the people, in the eye of people.”
