„Eine unförmige Gestalt in eine saubere, glatte Linie einfassen, bändigen, umformen, verletzen, zusammenpressen, einschnüren, verwandeln“, so beschrieb die US-amerikanische Malerin Christina Ramberg (1946–1995) einmal die Zeichnungen von Korsetts in ihren Skizzenbüchern. Ramberg war eine der faszinierendsten Künstler*innen, die aus der Generation der Chicago Imagists hervorgegangen war und einen bemerkenswerten Komplex an bizarren, formal eleganten, erotisch düsteren Gemälden hinterließ. Unter dem Einfluss des Surrealismus verströmen ihre scharf abgegrenzten und in eigentümlichen Variationen von in Korsetts, Bandagen und Stoffen eingeschnürten verstümmelten Torsi eine verunsichernde Ruhe, begleitet von einem widersprüchlichen Verlangen. Rambergs Auffassung vom Körper als Ort, der tiefgreifend mit seiner Umgebung verflochten und von Korsetts, Frisuren und Verhaltenskonventionen geformt ist, ist zentral für die Ausstellung in den KW Institute for Contemporary Art, die, basierend auf Rambergs Herangehensweise, eine Analyse des Verhaltens durch die Strukturen heraufbeschwört, die unsere Existenz von innen und außen organisieren. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht eine Auswahl von Rambergs Malereien und Zeichnungen, die um Positionen von Alexandra Bircken, Rachal Bradley, Sara Deraedt, Gaylen Gerber, Konrad Klapheck, Ghislaine Leung, Hans-Christian Lotz, Senga Nengudi, Ana Pellicer, Richard Rezac, Diane Simpson, Terre Thaemlitz, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger und Kathleen White ergänzt werden. Die für die Ausstellung ausgewählten Arbeiten greifen Rambergs Ansatz auf, das Verständnis für die uns umgebenden Elemente zu schärfen, die sich auf unser Verhalten, unseren Ausdruck und unsere Körpersprache auswirken und diese maßgeblich bedingen.

 

Anlässlich der Ausstellung wird eine umfangreiche Publikation erscheinen, die neue Essays von Kunsthistoriker*innen und -theoretiker*innen wie Anna Gritz, Dr. Larne Abse Gogarty und Judith Russi Kirshner mit experimentell–fiktionalen Texten von Dodie Bellamy und Jen George zusammenbringt. Ein umfangreicher Teil der Publikation wird Reprints aus Rambergs einzigartiger Diasammlung beinhalten.
